The first story tells of villagers who dug out a large ancient sword out of the ground. This sword (known as Krabi) was later presented to the governor of the province. The governor deemed these two swords a precious and sacred artifact and placed them in a cave called Khao Kanab Nam in a cross formation. The second story goes much simpler. In Krabi, there was a tree called Lumphi. The Chinese and Malay merchants would pronounce it kho-lo-bi or ka-lu-bi, both of which are incorrect. However, this kept on going until it finally became the name we know today, Krabi.

While Krabi’s first recorded history was from 1,200 A.D., it is believed that Krabi has existed during the prehistoric period and then already enjoyed having a community. It was thought to be like this thanks to archeological findings in the area, discovering things such as stone tools, pictures, pottery, and skeletal remains. Krabi also had another name during recorded history, “Ban Thai Samor.” Krabi then also had a different symbol for a province, which was a monkey.
