A small town located around 800 kilometers away from the capital city of Thailand, Krabi is famous for its stunning sceneries and natural environments. Some might even argue that it is the most beautiful in all of Thailand. This beautiful province, while being a port for tourists from around the world to explore the places in and around Krabi, has a rich history to match.

The Name “Krabi”

First and foremost, let us tell you how Krabi got its name. There are two stories of how this came to be.

The first story tells of villagers who dug out a large ancient sword out of the ground. This sword (known as Krabi) was later presented to the governor of the province. Then, another smaller sword was discovered, which was also given to the governor. The governor deemed these two swords a precious and sacred artifact and placed them in a cave called Khao Kanab Nam in a cross formation. If you have ever seen Krabi’s emblem, this is where it comes from.

The second story goes much simpler. In Krabi, there was a tree called Lumphi. The Chinese and Malay merchants would pronounce it kho-lo-bi or ka-lu-bi, both of which are incorrect. However, this kept on going until it finally became the name we know today, Krabi.

The History of Krabi

While Krabi’s first recorded history was from 1,200 A.D., it is believed that Krabi has existed during the prehistoric period and then already enjoyed having a community. It was thought to be like this thanks to archeological findings in the area, discovering things such as stone tools, pictures, pottery, and skeletal remains. Krabi also had another name during recorded history, “Ban Thai Samor.” Krabi then also had a different symbol for a province, which was a monkey.

The Culture of Krabi

Krabi enjoys a mixed culture, given the variety of ethnic groups present in the area. Because of that, many different religions and practices are widespread here, and you might notice this when you visit the province. Thanks to tourism, more and more cultures are becoming embedded with Krabi’s, making it more unique as the years go by.

Krabi also hosts plenty of different festivals, such as the Sat Duan Sip Festival, Laanta Lanta Festival, and Krabi Boek Fa Andaman Festival. Despite all the various festivals here, all of them are fully celebrated by all its inhabitants.

One of the most apparent things Krabi is known for is the delicious delicacies, which attract people from everywhere to try out the very best foods. From the traditional Thai food to western delicacies, different dishes from around the world are available here. As for the locals, they are quite laid back and hospitable just like all the Thai people in the country.

In conclusion, Krabi is beautiful, not only aesthetically, but historically and culturally as well. Everything about the province just made it to what it is today, a tourist hotspot promising exciting activities, stunning vistas, and lively atmosphere.
